Assessing and Enhancing Workplace Health and Safety Program Documentation
Client:
Large corporate printing firm
Mission:
The company desired an evaluation and enhancement of their overall health and safety program to reduce risks of injuries and damage as well as improvement of corporate compliance with regulatory agencies. Electrical safety, confined space entry, and sling/hoist/crane safety issues were identified as starting points for program enhancements.
Strategies:
- Work processes were carefully observed, which included discussions with workers who performed the operations.
- Risks for injury and compliance with OSHA and other regulatory bodies were assessed. Current program documentation was reviewed in light of current workplace behaviors and conditions.
- Best practices and regulatory requirements were researched.
- Revised programs were drafted and reviewed with affected departmental leaders for buy-in and support.
- Employee training programs which supported program changes were designed and implemented.
- Effectiveness was measured.
Results:
Reduced risk of employee injury and regulatory compliance activities resulted from updated programs, the purchase of appropriate safety equipment, and training in the use of the equipment and in new work procedures. A subsequent evaluation of processes confirmed desired changes in work behaviors.
