Mission:
Implement a system-wide change in corporate safety culture to positively effect the financial bottom line and to foster improved employee morale and retention.
Strategies:
- Baseline data regarding the corporate safety culture was assessed, measured, and documented.
- Regular meetings were held with the president/CEO regarding the status of the safety culture and climate to help him identify necessary behavioral changes at the leadership level and throughout the organization.
- A Gap Analysis was conducted based on the desired culture as defined by company leadership
- Risks were evaluated and prioritized, based on assessment of programs, corporate tolerance for risk, and the desired timeline.
- An effective team was developed for planning, communication, and implementation of new and revised programs.
- A “Safety Business Plan” was implemented to document progress, hold senior leaders accountable, and communicate change effectiveness.
Results:
- The employee safety and health program moved from a “must do to avoid regulatory problems” approach to a “this is how we do business in order to protect our employees and support our corporate community” mindset.
- Senior leaders acknowledged that the new culture made good business sense.
- Injury rates were reduced by 43% and property damage rates dropped by 63% over a 2-year time period in this high-risk industry.
